Twenty-four or four-and-twenty: Language modulates cross-modal matching for multidigit numbers in children and adults

چکیده
Does number–word structure have a long-lasting impact on transcoding? Contrary to English, German number words comprise decade–unit inversion (e.g., vierundzwanzig is literally translated as four-and-twenty). To investigate the mental representation of numbers, we tested effect visual and linguistic–morphological characteristics development verbal–visual transcoding. In longitudinal cross-linguistic design, response times (RTs) in number-matching experiment were analyzed Grade 2 (119 German-speaking 179 English-speaking children) 3 (131 160 children). test for long-term effects, same was given 38 42 adults. Participants needed decide whether spoken matched subsequent Arabic number. Systematic variation digits nonmatching distractors allowed comparison three different transcoding accounts (lexicalization, visual, linguistic–morphological). speakers generally slower rejecting inverted than English speakers. Across age groups, more distracted by numbers that included correct unit digit, whereas showed stronger distraction when decade digit included. These RT patterns reflect differences morphology. The individual cost an distractor (inversion effect) predicted arithmetic skills second-graders only. moderate relationship between efficiency identify matching performance could be observed cross-linguistically all groups but not significant Thus, findings provide consistent evidence persistent processing, with particularly pronounced young children.

"four-and-twenty, Twenty-four". What's in a Number?
This paper investigates "what's in a number", i.e. how natural numbers are pronounced in several European languages. As regards reading numbers above 20, 29 languages read the decade first and then the digit, e.g. twenty-four, and 10 languages read the digit before the decade, e.g. four-and-twenty. Two languages, Norwegian and Czech, use both systems, and 9 languages use (partly) a vigesimal sy...

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) disorder was studied in children and adolescents with chronic and/or recurrent rhinosinusitis not associated with bronchial asthma. Ten children with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of chronic and/or recurrent rhinosinusitis, consecutively attended at the Pediatric Otolaryngology Outpatient Clinic, Federal University of São Paulo, were evaluated. Prolonged es...
متن کاملThe Densest Lattice in Twenty-four Dimensions
In this research announcement we outline the methods used in our recent proof that the Leech lattice is the unique densest lattice in R24. Complete details will appear elsewhere, but here we illustrate our techniques by applying them to the case of lattice packings in R2, and we discuss the obstacles that arise in higher dimensions.
متن کاملThe Whorfian hypothesis and numerical cognition: is 'twenty-four' processed in the same way as 'four-and-twenty'?
Recent theoretical developments have redefined a Whorfian effect as a processing difference due to the language of the individual, and no longer as a marker for or against linguistic determinism. Within this framework. Whorfian effects can be used to investigate whether a particular part of the cognitive system is penetrable by language processes or forms an encapsulated module, provided the ex...
